Lone Cypress, California Coast

"250 Years of Faith"

A quiet strength standing alone, this Carmel sunset will steady your soul, fill your home with peace, and remind you that endurance is beautiful.

The Story Behind The Photo

What could make a lone tree, clinging to a wind-torn cliff, the most photographed tree on Earth?

I stood on the edge of Carmel Bay, salt spray stinging my cheeks, wind howling like it wanted to push me into the sea. The sky had turned an ache of pink and gray, storm clouds bruised with fading orange light. Rain threatened. My camera bag felt heavier with every gust.

The Lone Cypress has stood on this granite ledge for over 250 years, since before our nation was born. Spanish settlers walked this coast when its first roots gripped the rock. Now Pebble Beach calls it their trademark, a symbol carved into golf balls and postcards, “the most photographed tree in the world”.

I smelled brine and wet cypress, tasted salt on my lips. Waves crashed below, hissing against the rocks. The light was slipping fast, and I only had minutes before dusk swallowed the color whole.
Fighting the wind to steady my tripod, I framed the shot. In that moment, I understood why Morse called this tree the perfect symbol of resilience. It had survived fire, storms, and time itself, still standing, still reaching toward the sky.

I pressed the shutter as the last light broke through the clouds. Awe swept over me. I wasn’t just capturing a tree. I was capturing a story of endurance, written in bark and stone.
