The Story Behind The Photo
Have you ever stood at the edge of the world and felt the ocean wash your worries away?
I crouched beneath the massive wooden pilings of the Homer Spit pier as the blue hour settled over Kachemak Bay. The smell of salt and old wood filled the air. The sound of waves lapping against the barnacles created a gentle rhythm that slowed my racing heart.
This 4.5-mile strip of land is legendary. They call it the “End of the Road” and the “Halibut Fishing Capital of the World.” It has survived the massive 1964 earthquake and decades of Alaskan storms. It stands strong, no matter what the ocean throws at it.
Capturing this image was a challenge. The tide was rising, and the light was fading fast. I had to stand perfectly still in the cold, wet sand to get the long exposure just right. My fingers ached, but my spirit soared.
As the water turned to glass in my lens, I felt a deep peace. This photo captures that moment of stillness. It is a profound reminder that even in the midst of life’s rising tides, we can find a quiet place to stand.
